Kayaking is a sport that can be performed on just about any body of water. However, whitewater kayaking is slightly different to sea kayaking and recreational kayaking is a separate entity altogether. Although there are dozens of whitewater kayak types, playboat and creek boat are the two basics. Playboats are designed to be nimble and a skilled kayaker can easily navigate the numerous obstacles that appear when kayaking down a river. Creek boats are longer than playboats and are far more stable. The extra speed and stability one can generate in a creek boat makes them an excellent choice when it comes to taking on rapids. Recreational kayaks have a sealed hull and are made from polyethylene for strength and affordability. Nonetheless, your choice of kayak really depends on your skill level as much as anything else.

Paddles
Whitewater kayaking usually requires a shorter paddle than sea kayaking. The usual whitewater kayak paddle is approximately 6 feet (183 cm) long though this can jump to almost 7 feet (213 cm). Other paddles are 8 feet (244 cm) long. The wider your kayak is, the longer your paddle should be. Avoid paddles which are made of plastic and have metal shafts as these are cheap and heavy. There are also fiberglass and carbon paddles with the latter offering a stronger stroke.

Clothes
You should always dress like it’s winter when kayaking. There is always the possibility that you will be thrown overboard so you should have warm clothes on to fight the inevitable cold you will feel should you get wet. Of course, overdressing can also be uncomfortable but when you’re too hot, you can always go in the water to cool down. When you get cold, it’s very hard to function and combat. Wetsuits are a good idea, especially for beginners who are unused to the sensation of falling in the water. Don’t wear cotton while kayaking as it soaks up the water, making you feel extremely cold by sapping away heat.

PFD
This acronym stands for Personal Floatation Device. It goes without saying that you need a life jacket or preserver when you’re in the water, no matter how good a swimmer you are. Always try out a PFD before purchase, making sure that it fits correctly.

Skirt
Although you don’t really need this if you’re on a cruise in a serene lake, a spray skirt is handy if you want to keep the water out of the kayak. These come in neoprene and nylon and are essential in rough waters.

Helmets
Those who enjoy sea kayaking may not need a helmet but whitewater kayakers must have one. Beginner kayakers should probably also have one, even on calm waters. Most helmets are made from plastic or fiberglass. As there are no regulations relating to helmets, you need to be careful when choosing one.

Miscellaneous
Although it is not something you would immediately think of, a rope bag is a great way of feeling secure. If someone falls in the water, you can use the rope to pull them to safety. The bag is a convenient storage device. You should also bring a knife in case someone gets tangled in a rope or gets stuck underneath a kayak.

When you are dealing with water and nature, it is always best to be safe rather than sorry. You win no prizes for bravery but gain plenty of peace of mind when you pack properly for kayaking.

Maine kayaking tours are one of the state’s biggest attractions. Lovers of adrenaline filled watersports flock to Maine in their thousands to experience the thrill of whitewater and sea kayaking. There are dozens of tour companies, each of which offer courses in whitewater rafting for all skill levels. Each company is bound by state law to include safety instruction, safety equipment that meets stringent standards and to have a low student to instructor ratio at all times. Sea kayaking gives visitors the opportunity to explore the beauty of Maine. This includes exploring the coastline and viewing wildlife such as puffins and whales. Three of the best places to go kayaking in Maine are: The St. Croix river, the Machias river and The Bold Coast.

St. Croix River
The St. Croix river flows along the Canadian border and is known for its fishing and challenging yet manageable rapids. These rapids are the ideal test for the beginner or intermediate whitewater kayaker. Several companies offer a multi-day trip along the river with camping facilities spaced out along the route offering respite whenever travelers need it. It is easy to lose hours in the beauty of this river, most of which is now a preserved and protected region. The St. Croix river is recommended to those looking to improve their kayaking technique.

Machias River
If the St. Croix river is for those seeking a serene passage through Maine, the Machias river provides a challenge that will test even the most experienced kayaker. The Machias is the home of whitewater exploits with its rapids really providing a test of your technical skill. This challenge will be different during the course of the year because the river’s water levels change with the seasons. If you want a less challenging voyage, it is recommended that you travel the Machias river in May because the water levels have dropped at this point, reducing the effectiveness of the rapids. Visitors are also encouraged to take advantage of the camping facilities, the fishing and the opportunity to hike and take pictures of this splendid wilderness.

Bold Coast
The Bold Coast is the most Eastern location for kayaking in the state. The huge tides in Maine and the large amount of fog that appears from time to time ensure that this is a sea kayaking trip that experienced individuals will really appreciate. The trip is exhilarating yet intimidating enough to ensure that respect must be shown to this challenging body of water. One of the major highlights of the Bold Coast is the Great Wass Island nature preserve. Generally, only parties of at least two are accepted for reservations. Most companies charge around $100 per person for a day trip on the Bold Coast.

There are few better states in America for kayaking. Maine has everything one could want: Scenery, ample facilities, challenge and many miles of unspoilt wilderness which is yours for the exploring. With routes for all experience levels, it’s time to book your ticket to Maine now. Do so quickly as kayaking trips sell out with incredible speed.

When it comes to seeing the natural beauty of the open bodies of water on planet Earth, there are few more enjoyable routes of travel than via sea kayaking. It is a world away from traditional kayaking which involves braving rapids and partaking in a high octane sport that is sure to leave you breathless but excited. Sea kayaking is generally more serene and proper planning can ensure a never to be forgotten day of leisure in the ocean. However, failing to take the precaution of a sea kayaking checklist could have disastrous consequences. Here is what to look out for.

The Kayak
A sea kayaking vessel is completely different to its whitewater counterpart. It is built for comfort, safety and storage space. Large sea kayaks are up to 26 feet (7.85 meters) long and approximately 3 feet (0.91metres) wide. They are usually designed for up to three people and have plenty of space for equipment and provisions. It is foolish to take to the seas without going on several test runs to ensure the seaworthiness of the kayak. The middle of the ocean is not the place to be finding out about your kayak’s flaws!

Your Gear
When traveling in the ocean or a similarly large body of water for lengthy periods of time, you simply must be 100% certain about everything you have packed. Check and double check your equipment, ensuring you have a helmet, personal flotation device, GPS, food, water, sunscreen, a tent, cooking utensils, clothes, a sleeping bag, lantern and map. You should buy waterproof spray and use it on all your gear.

Always prepare for the worst. If you tip over and fall into the sea, how will you retrieve your gear? Place everything in one or two sturdy waterproof bags. If everything falls out, it will be easy to recover. Also, make sure your flotation device is a good fit so that you can paddle with little difficulty should the need arise.

Map
Presumably, you already have a route in mind. Be sure to map the area carefully so that you will be well aware of any potential danger spots. If you are camping for the night, know precisely where your camping location is and inform someone of your journey. It is also essential to let someone know when you are expected to return. In the event that you get into trouble and are late returning, your confidant can alert the Rescue Services. This action may save your life. Do not travel alone and have a companion who is an experienced sea kayaker if possible.

If You Tip Over
Tipping over in the sea is a possibility and it is important for you not to panic. Spending any length of time in the water could cause hypothermia and death. You must have your personal flotation device on at all times in the event of you tipping over. People with hypothermia should not swim (movement in the cold water lowers body temperature further) so this device will be a life saver. It is estimated that 30 minutes is the max time you can spend in cold water at sea before being hit with hypothermia. Swim back to your kayak as soon as possible and change clothes when back on board.

Sea kayaking is a wonderful experience when proper precautions are taken. Don’t allow yourself to become a tragic statistic, ensure every item in your sea kayaking checklist is ticked.

Over the years kayaks have come a long way from what they once were. Now it seems as though there is a kayak type for just about anything that you want to do. So, no matter how you choose to get wet with your kayak, there is likely a kayak type you can use to take full advantage of the situation.

Here is a basic overview of the many types of kayaks that are on the market today:

• Ocean/Sea Kayaks: This type of kayak is designed specifically for the open bodies of water. This design is the closest to the ‘ancient’ kayaks and works well on any large and open body of water such as the ocean or even large rivers. Typically built long and smooth, these kayaks feature all kinds of room for storage and are really meant for calmer conditions.

• Touring Kayaks: Similar in design to the ocean/sea kayak, these kayaks are also made for open bodies of water. However, as the name suggests, these kayaks are meant for those who intend on spending an extended amount of time on that open body of water. These kayaks are designed to be faster than a typical recreational kayak and also allow for very efficient paddling to take place.

• Whitewater Kayaks: These stubby cousins of the other kayaks are made to take all the abuse that the whitewaters of the mountain rivers and streams dish out. Typically only five to ten feet in length they are much easier to maneuver, but this type of kayak gives up a lot of the creature comforts offered by the flat water kayaks. This is typically fine though as those who whitewater kayak are not usually interested in anything but maneuverability and durability.

• Recreational Kayaks: The next step up form a canoe, this type of kayak is for those who simply want to take it easy. Built long and sleek with lots of storage, they are designed with comfort first and performance second. They are easy to use and enjoyed by many a novice.

• Fishing Kayaks: Fishing form kayaks become so popular that there are now kayaks that are designed specifically for fishing. These kayaks have special compartments and other goodies all for the angler and are typically the SOT, or sit on top, type of kayak, which is more open. This is opposed to the traditional kayak which keeps the occupant more closed in. SOT types allow for easier maneuvering for the fisherman and will generally make the fishgig experience that much better.

• Other Kayaks: There are even more kinds of kayaks that are worth mentioning. These include inflatable kayaks, folding kayaks, and even tandem kayaks. These types of kayaks are less used, but do allow for even more people to enjoy the wonderful sport of kayaking.

It should be noted that there are several sub categories to each of the groups mentioned. These sub categories are determined by your skill level, the type of paddling you like to do, and of course how much money you wish to spend on your kayak gear.

Kayaking is a sport that is gaining a lot of momentum and many wonder what the top kayaking destinations are. The top destinations really all depend on the type of kayaking that you like to do, but there are some places in particular that many will argue couldn’t get any better for kayaking.

Here are some of the top kayaking destinations in the world:

• Hawaii: The Hawaiian Islands are the perfect place for those who are into recreational kayaking or touring kayaking. Finding a flat spot that is carved out by huge rocks formed by volcanic eruptions is a treat to the eyes that will not soon be forgotten. This is not to mention the clear waters that allow kayakers to see down a good ways and really take in all the sea life that is more than abundant in Hawaii. From Maui to Lana’i, the Hawaii is a can’t miss destination for all kayakers.

• Australia: Australia offers kayaking action for those who want to hit the whitewater and for those who wish to do a bit of touring. The Tully River and the Murray River offer all that a whitewater enthusiast can handle with rapids ranging from Class II to Class IV. Those who want to take it a bit easier can be treated to the wonderful sites that only parts of the Great Barrier Reef can produce, which will treat open water kayakers to sights not witnessed anywhere else in the world.

• Utah: Utah also offers both whitewater and recreational kayaking. Those looking for a thrill will find it in many parts of the Green River and those who simply want to sit back and take in some sites will be able to do so where the river slows near the Labyrinth Canyon.

• Greece: The topography that makes up the Greek coast is a touring kayaker’s dream come true. Lefkada Island is perfectly centered in the Ionian Sea and has many large islands surrounded by small islands all around. This leads to many hours of enjoyment for those who simply wish to relax and enjoy all that the water has to offer.

• Idaho: Idaho is famous for more than just potatoes. The Salmon River offers some of the best whitewater kayaking in the world. Those looking for whitewater fun will get more than their fill in Idaho as the Salmon River winds for more than 100 miles and takes you down an astounding 3,000 feet. With lots of fast rapids and pools galore, the Salmon River is a whitewater gift from the Heavens.

Kayaking is all about finding new and undiscovered waters that will allow you to feel the thrill you are after. It is true that there are many places that you can kayak and get your fill, you will not experience anything like these top kayaking destinations anywhere else. While any of these top kayaking destinations would make for a great kayaking experience, the true kayaking enthusiast should attempt to visit as many as they can in their lifetime so they can truly know kayaking bliss. Keep in mind, you can often rent kayaking gear at these destinations.

Getting into the sport of kayaking can be a fun filled one and knowing what gear is essential is the key to starting off right. First of all, kayaking can be a costly sport. Many that want to get into it don’t realize just how costly until they begin to price out the gear. Once the gear is purchased however, the fun and excitement felt while paddling down a white river or even on an open calm body of water simply can’t be beat.

While some will argue that certain items are non-essential gear, what is listed will not only make your kayaking experience more fun, but also safer. Essential gear for kayaking includes:

• Kayak: You can’t go kayaking without a kayak. What is important to know is that there are several different types of kayaks you can buy. You can buy a white water kayak, ocean kayak, or a touring kayak. Each kayak is unique and meant for a particular style of kayaking so you should choose your kayak based on what kind of kayaking you plan on enjoying.

• PDF: This stands for Personal Flotation Device. NEVER kayak without a PDF. A PDF is also known as a life preserver and having one on at all times could very well save you if the unthinkable where to happen.

• Paddles: Each kayak uses a specific type of paddle so be sure to ask the store where you are purchasing your kayak from which paddles are appropriate.

• Helmet: This is only required for white water kayaking, but it doesn’t hurt to always wear one.

• Spray Skirt: This helps keep the water out of the kayak. When purchasing one of these, make sure it will fit you and your kayak.

• Gloves: While some may say these are not necessary, those of you that have experienced blisters, scraped knuckles, and cold hands may argue the point.

• Dry suit/Wetsuit: Worn at your discretion but very nice to have in colder waters.

• Booties: These should be comfortable and fit easily into your kayak.

• Rope Bag: This could save your life or that of your friend. Strongly recommended.

• Knife: If you get caught up in some ropes or trapped under water, you will be happy that you have one with you.

• Float bags: These are bags that go to the stern of the kayak and keep it from sinking should you get separated from it.

• Dry bag: Great for stowing gear like cameras and other non-essentials. Keep it inside the kayak with you.

Now that you have all the necessary equipment, you are ready to hit the water and have the thrill of a lifetime. While some of the gear listed is definitely essential and some is somewhat non-essential, to fully enjoy your kayaking experience it is recommended to get it all. If you are going to skimp on some of the gear, never skimp on safety gear. You can replace a camera, but you can’t replace a life, it simply isn’t worth risking your life to try to save a couple of bucks.

Take a look around the city of San Diego, and you’re likely to see everyone getting around on bike or by trolley. While it’s true that San Diego is full of sites and attractions, very few people realize that it’s also an ideal location to experience some great kayaking. In fact, some of the best scenery of San Diego is only seen from the water, and kayaking is an excellent way to take in all of the sights and sounds of this “big little city”.

Start your kayaking adventure in San Diego by taking a tour of the La Jolla Sea Caves. While it sounds like it may be an intimidating experience, it’s actually a very pleasant and fun outdoor adventure! Beginning at the La Jolla Shores, you can paddle your way through an outdoor paradise while you view areas of San Diego’s coast. Before reaching the historical sea caves, you’ll have a chance to get up close and personal with sea lions, stingrays, and other aquatic life that reside within these canals. In fact, it’s even said that harbor seals sit perched among the rocks of the water and “wave” at their visitors who pass by!

However, kayaking in San Diego is just as fun in the fall and winter as it is in the summer. Winter is known to be a season of hibernation and mating, and that’s exactly what you’ll find as you explore Baja’s Pacific Coast! During the colder seasons, gray whales leave their homeland of the Arctic Ocean and make their way to the inviting warmth of Baja. In the months of December and January, the whales mate and give birth. Take advantage of a guided tour from La Jolla Shores during this time, and experience the thrill of viewing these amazing animals in person.

If you plan to visit San Diego with small children, there are opportunities for them to experience the fun of kayaking as well. In areas of Monterey and Elkhorn Slough, there are very calm and tranquil waters that are perfect for children and families. Monterey
Bay offers fascinating history and abundant marine life, while Elkhorn Slough is an excellent kayaking route for the nature and wildlife lover. (Often, you can spot several breeds of exotic birds.) The children will love the feeling of paddling through the water on a boat, and adults will enjoy the quiet ride while taking in some sightseeing.

If you’ve ever dreamed of catching the biggest fish among your friends and family, then look into opportunities for kayak fishing around Monterey Bay. While this area is known for its calm and peaceful surroundings, it is also home to some of California’s best fishing.

Kayaking is an activity enjoyed by many people of all ages. It requires little or no experience and nearly anyone of any skill level can participate. It’s most popular as a summertime sport, but is also a great activity during the winter. Kayaking also seems relatively friendly to the environment; more so than speed boating or water skiing. Because a kayak doesn’t create large or frequent waves, require fuel, or disperse hazards into the air, it is indeed a fairly safe activity for humans and wildlife alike.

Kayaking on freshwater lakes and streams creates little turbulence and therefore, does not disturb fish or other aquatic life. Actually, the gentle paddling and movement of the kayak helps to bring kelp and seaweed to the surface, making for convenient snacking to the fish. However, there is a downside to kicking up an all-you-can-buffet for your fishy friends. In addition to bringing food to the surface, kayaking also stirs up litter that’s been lurking beneath the waters. Most fish will not eat the trash that rises to the top, but other aquatic animals will mistake it for food. This could cause the animals to choke on the indigestible litter, leading to death. As hazardous as this sounds, it isn’t very likely for such an event to take place. Most litter in lakes and streams is found along the shoreline and settles in the sand and dirt, and isn’t likely to drift away to the main body of water.

Unlike boats operated by motor and fuel, kayaks pose little or no harm to the fish swimming beneath. Kayaks don’t move at a rapid pace, and the fish swimming below have ample time to move out of the boat’s way. And because kayaks do not have a motor, fish have no risk of getting caught underneath the boat.

One potential hazard that results from kayaking is human waste. This depends solely on where you plan to kayak, and if there are resources available (such as campsites) along the shoreline. When there are no facilities in sight, you’re paddling in the middle of a lake, and nature calls, then often you are given no choice but to expel your waste in the middle of the water. While human waste is considered biodegradable, it can be harmful when ingested by fish. The only preventative measure is to avoid using the water as a restroom, but again, this can’t always be helped. Some public lakes and streams have taken steps to preserve the quality of the water by requiring permits for kayaking. This won’t eliminate a human waste problem, but does help regulate entry into the lake and prevent it from becoming overcrowded.

An important factor to remember when kayaking is that you are a guest in someone else’s home. You may not be greeted by anyone or be able to kick up your feet and watch TV, but the water is home to many aquatic animals and wildlife. Just as you would not throw trash on the floor or destroy the home of another, you shouldn’t do it outdoors either. Keep all trash with you in your kayak and properly dispose of it after you return to shore. Don’t dump anything in the water, and try to avoid expelling human waste if at all possible. By doing your part, you will help keep kayaking a safe and enjoyable activity for yourself and the environment.

While kayaking has quickly become a popular choice of water activity and recreation, it’s by far one of the oldest forms of transportation. People have been traveling by kayak for centuries, mainly because it was once the only method of water transportation. But over time, it evolved from a necessity to a recreational sport, leading to the development of kayaking gear and accessories. If you are planning to participate in a kayaking adventure for the first time, you may be unsure of what you will need. Here are a few tips for finding the best kayaking equipment.

Obviously, you will need a kayak. If you are going through a kayaking tour company, chances are you will have the opportunity to rent a kayak as part of your package price. But if you’re going independently, or with friends and family, you’ll need your own kayak. Kayaks come in many different sizes, and you need to determine how many people will be traveling with you. Even if you’re planning to kayak alone, consider purchasing one with two or more seats. This way you will have room for others on future trips and you can still distribute the weight by using heavier items for leverage if you want to paddle alone. Speaking of paddles, you will need those too. Choosing a paddle takes time and there are factors to consider when looking for paddles. First of all, be sure the paddle fits the specific type of paddling you have in mind. For example, if you plan to paddle through white water, you will need a paddle with a stronger and thicker blade. You also need to make sure the paddle fits your body strength and height, as well as the height and width of your kayak.

If you have a smaller frame, pay attention to the shaft’s diameter. Often too large a diameter can cause wrist or shoulder injuries to a small person. You should visit a kayak outfitter in person for paddles, and ask for assistance on properly measuring your body type for a paddle.

Although it’s often overlooked, kayak clothing is vital to the safety of your kayaking trip. Unexpected events easily happen even in the most tranquil waters. You never know when your kayak could flip, or when you’ll be encountered by a random splash of water. Therefore, it’s important that you seek quick-drying clothes when obtaining your kayaking equipment. Be sure to find loose fitting shorts, tops, and jackets. Synthetic material is often recommended for kayaking. Avoid wearing cotton garments, and consider wearing a swimsuit underneath your clothes. Cotton stays wet and you are likely to be very uncomfortable during the remainder of your trip. If you plan to kayak in the winter month, you may want to purchase a synthetic kayaking suit to wear over your clothes. This will keep you dry as well as prevent hypothermia.

Don’t forget to include the basics, such as lifejackets, helmets, and first aid kits. Safety should always remain your top priority on your kayaking excursion and you never know when these items will come in handy.
